PORCELAIN DENTAL VENEERS

What are porcelain dental veneers?
Porcelain dental veneers are possibly the most esthetic way of creating the perfect smile. Porcelain is harder than enamel and will therefore be able to last for many years. As porcelain mimics tooth structure better than any other restorative material it can be manipulated to recreate the image of a natural tooth. It is also a very durable material that will avoid decay as well as resist staining better than the tooth enamel itself. The translucent effect of teeth is generally what gives it a luster as light normally reflects of the opaque tooth dentin below the enamel. Porcelain dental veneers have the ability to replicate this effect allowing patients to obtain bright and natural looking smiles.

Why get porcelain dental veneers?
Veneers are often referred to as ‘instant orthodontics’ as your dentist may be able to straightened your teeth in the space of two appointments as opposed to regular orthodontic treatment which may take a few years.

There are a number of reasons as to why one may desire porcelain dental veneers:
1. To close diastemas (gaps between teeth)
2. To lengthen and reshape teeth
3. To repair chipped, broken or misshapen teeth
4. To cover stains and discolorations.

What is the procedure and how long does it take?
A porcelain dental veneer is essentially a thin wafer of porcelain made to cover the front surface of the tooth. They only require a minimal amount of tooth reduction, approximately 0.5 mm, and are therefore considered to be a more conservative method for tooth restoration than a crown. However it must be noted that this is not a reversible processes on account of the tooth reduction.

The placement of porcelain dental veneers is a procedure that requires precision, skill and a degree of artistry from the performing dentist. This procedure requires at least two visits to complete. The length of the appointments will vary depending on the condition of your teeth and on the number of veneers you are having done.

During first visit your dentist will essentially ‘plan your smile’. Your dentist will discuss the different options available to best complement the shape of your face and your esthetic desires. You may also discuss the need for anesthesia as well as the cost of the procedure. Following the initial consultation, during the same appointment, the dentist will prepare the teeth by removing a small amount of the enamel in order to accommodate the veneers and provide a better more rough surface for the bonding. Following this the dentist will take impressions of your teeth to be sent to a dental laboratory where porcelain dental veneers to fit your mouth precisely will be created. In the meantime your dentist may suggest temporary veneers to protect your teeth.

Between the preparation visit and the insertion visit it is normal to feel sensitivity to hot and cold on account of the removal of a small portion of the teeth’s enamel. Once the permanent veneers are placed this sensitivity should lessen and then disappear.

During the second appointment your dentist will place the permanent veneers to see that they fit perfectly with the ideal shape and colour. This visit is generally longer in length while you and your dentist are required to work together, further shaping and trimming the veneers to your ensure your ultimate satisfaction.

Approximately one week after the placement of the porcelain dental veneers you should make another appointment with your dentist to evaluate the new veneers and assess the tissue response, as well as to ask any outstanding questions that you may have.

How much do porcelain dental veneers cost?
Fees for porcelain dental veneers will vary depending on the area you live in and the difficulty of your case. Talk to your doctor at the consultation appointment to get an estimate of the costs before committing to the procedure. There is a very wide range in cost for veneers, as a result of the many variables involved with each patient. It can be expected for the cost to approximately fall within the range of $700 to $2000. However one must consider the longevity and attractiveness that the porcelain dental veneers can create, providing an individual with a new natural smile.

How do you maintain the porcelain dental veneers?
Maintenance of the veneers is fairly simple:
1. Continue to brush and floss your teeth regularly.
2. It is important to note that despite porcelain dental veneers being stronger than     normal enamel, they have a weak tensile strength and therefore should avoid doing     anything that may twist the veneers.
3. Further sensitivity to hot and cold may be noticed for another one to two weeks, if     this persists or concerns you contact your dentist.
4. If you clench/grind your teeth, inform your dentist so they may provide you with a     night guard to prevent excessive stress placed on your teeth while you sleep.

The new porcelain dental veneers will no doubt satisfy you and provide you with an ideal natural smile for many years to come!
