Maroubra is located 10 kilometers south-east to the Cities Central Business area. The first house was built in the suburb Maroubra in 1861 after which a number of settlers arrived in the 1870s to work on the wool scouring works at the northern end of the bay. Maroubra received its name from an aboriginal word which means ‘like thunder’. In 1898 a fully rigged iron ship that weighed over 1500 tonnes was caught by the winds and shipwrecked at the northern end of Maroubra beach while it was bound for Newcastle. The shipwreck remained on the beach for many years. One of the streets in Maroubra, Hereward Street was named after the ship. Maroubra junction is located in the center of the suburb and is one of the main shopping areas in the location. The main shopping center in Maroubra is called Pacific Square, previously known as Maroubra Mall. This shopping center has everything necessary including outdoor food court, Coles, Aldi supermarkets and many specialty shops. There are also a few shopping areas beside Maroubra Junction which include the Lexington Place, Duffy’s Corner and the South Maroubra Shopping Village. There are also numerous churches and hotels located in the area of Maroubra. Just north of the beautiful Maroubra beach is Mahon Pool. There is also a skating park at the south end of Maroubra beach.
