Kensington is located 6 kilometres south-east of Sydney’s Central Business District and is in the local government area of the City of Randwick. Prior to the suburb acquiring the name Kensington it was called the ‘Lachlan Mills Estate’, ‘Stannumville’ and then ‘Epsom’. It was not until the late 1880s that the suburb acquired the name Kensington. Kensington was originally inhabited by tribes of Aboriginal people. The Cadigal people were part of the salt-water clans and were known for fishing and travelling in canoes. In 1828 it was observed that about50-60 clans of Cadigal people were living near the Lachlan swamps of Kensington. The swamps in the area supplied the people with fruit, nectar, roots and tubers. However currently there are very few Aboriginals who are living in Kensington. Kensington is a very multi-cultural suburb, home to a wide range of ethnic backgrounds. Interestingly only 56.4% of the residents were born in Australia. The most common ethnicities for the remaining 44.6% of residents includes: British, Indonesian, New Zealander and Chinese. Kensington is located to the immediate south of Moore Park and west of Randwick Racecourse. The major landmarks of Kensington include the main campus of the University of New South Wales, the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) and the exclusive Australian Golf Club. Currently it is estimated that Kensington houses just over 11 000 residents.
